Gun Safety

For years, gun safety advocates have worked to pass laws that would require background checks on all firearm sales, require gun locks in homes where children are present, and pass “red flag laws” that allow a family to remove a firearm from a loved one who may harm themselves or others.

These laws are known to save lives and lower crime rates in states where they are in place, while preserving 2nd amendment rights for responsible gun owners.

Republicans have not taken action on any of these important bills, and my own family has paid the price. This past year my 51-year-old nephew Darrick took his life with a gun he should not have had after struggling with daily living for years. His grown daughters had gotten the gun away from him and the police made them give it back. I know firsthand how lives are shattered from gun violence, which includes suicide.

I support second amendment rights. I also support keeping guns away from a person who might hurt themselves or someone else. I believe in mandating gun safety locks where children are present. I support mandating background checks on all gun sales. I support treating the mental health issues that lead to gun violence.
